Introduction
A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a secure tunnel between two or more devices. VPNs are used to protect private web traffic from snooping, interference, and censorship. You can also use a VPN to access region-locked content, such as streaming video services not available in your country.
If you have a Fios router, you can set up a VPN to keep your web traffic safe and private. In this guide, we’ll show you how to do it.
Before You Begin
To set up a VPN on your Fios router, you’ll need:
-A computer connected to your Fios router via Ethernet
-A router with firmware that supports VPNs (most do)
-An account with a VPN service
What is a VPN and What Can it Do for Me?
A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, allows you to create a secure connection to another network over the Internet. VPNs can be used to access region-restricted websites, shield your browsing activity from prying eyes on public Wi-Fi, and more.
These days VPNs are really popular, but not for the reasons they were originally created. They originally were just a way to connect business networks together securely over the internet or allow you to access a business network from home.
Nowadays people are more aware of the dangers of connecting to the internet without some form of security. So they are using VPNs for all sorts of different things like:
– Bypassing geo-restrictions and accessing content that would otherwise be unavailable in their country (like watching BBC iPlayer from outside the UK)
– Hiding their real IP address and browsing anonymously
– Encrypting all their internet traffic so that their ISP or anyone else cannot snoop on what they are doing
– Getting around firewalls at work or school
– Helping keep their online activity private from their ISP or government
Setting up a VPN on Your Router
A VPN, or a Virtual Private Network, is a secure tunnel between two or more devices. This tunnel encrypts your data, making it impossible for anyone to see what you’re doing online. In order to setup a VPN on your Fios router, you will need to know your router’s IP address, the VPN server address, and the VPN server’s preshared key.
Logging into your router
In order to configure a VPN, you can either download and sign into the VPN’s app or use the VPN’s host information to set up a VPN connection in your Fios router.
If you want to set up a VPN connection in your Fios router, you will need to log into your router first. You can do this by visiting http://192.168.1.1 in your web browser.
Once you are logged in, look for the “VPN” section in the router’s settings. Here, you will be able to add a new VPN connection.
When adding a new VPN connection, you will need to enter the following information:
– The name of the VPN provider
– The server address of the VPN provider
– Your username and password (if applicable)
– The encryption protocol that you want to use
Navigating to the VPN settings
1. Open a web browser and type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar.
2. Enter your router user name and password when prompted. The user name is usually “admin” and the password is usually “password” or “1234”. If you can’t remember your router user name and password, you can usually find them printed on the bottom or back of your router.
3. Click the VPN tab at the top of the page.
4. Under “VPN Type”, select PPTP VPN.
5. Under “User Name”, enter your VPN username (this should be provided to you by your VPN provider).
6. Under “Password”, enter your VPN password (this should be provided to you by your VPN provider).
7. Check the box next to “Enable this account”.
8. Click Save at the bottom of the page
Configuring the VPN
If you want to use a VPN on your Fios router, you will need to configure it through the router’s settings. You will need to have a router that is VPN-enabled in order to do this.
Configuring the VPN on your router is actually pretty simple. You will need to log in to your router’s settings and then find the VPN settings. From there, you will just need to enter in the information for the VPN that you want to use.
If you want to use a Fios router with a VPN, you will need to make sure that you have a router that is VPN-enabled. You can check this by looking for a “VPN” logo or symbol on your router. If you don’t see this, then your router is not VPN-enabled and you will not be able to use it with a VPN service.
Once you have confirmed that your router is VPN-enabled, you will just need to login to your router’s settings and find the VPN settings. From there, simply enter in the required information for the VPN service that you want to use. Once everything is entered correctly, just save the changes and exit out of the settings menu. That’s it! Your Fios router should now be connected to the VPN service of your choice.
Connecting to Your VPN
If you have a cable or DSL modem, you will connect your computer to the router using an Ethernet cable. If you have a wireless router, you can connect wirelessly by following the instructions that came with your router.
Once you have connected your computer to the router, open your web browser and enter 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. This will take you to the Verizon FiOS Router configuration page.
Click on VPN on the left-hand side of the page, then click on Add PPTP VPN Profile.
Enter a Profile Name, then enter the Hostname or IP Address of the VPN Server. For most people, this will be their ISP’s VPN server address.
Next, enter your VPN Username and Password. These are typically provided by your ISP or VPN provider.
Make sure that the Send All Traffic option is enabled, then click Save Profile.
Now that your profile is saved, click on Activate next to the profile to connect to the VPN server.
Conclusion
If you want to use a VPN with your Fios router, you will need to set up a VPN server. This can be done using a software VPN service or by setting up a VPN server yourself. If you choose to set up a VPN server yourself, you will need to create a static IP address for the server and forward port 1723 to that IP address. You will also need to generate security keys for the server.
